Lone Women, the latest book from Victor LaValle (The Changeling, The Ballad of Black Tom), came out yesterday, but it turns out that an adaptation of the novel for the small screen has been in the works for months.

In a recent interview with Esquire, LaValle shared that an onscreen adaptation of his book has been in the works for half a year. “Yes, we sold the rights about six months ago to one of the cool streamers,” he said. “I’m adapting that myself. I’ve written the pilot and we have an amazing director attached to it, plus a wonderful actress to play Adelaide. We’re trying to turn that into a season. Here’s hoping.”

Lone Women takes place in 1915 Montana and focuses on Adelaide Henry, a woman homesteader who lugs around a giant trunk that tends to kill anyone around her if she ever happens to open it. The book is just one of LaValle’s that is getting considered for adaptation. His The Devil in Silver is in the works at AMC as an anthology series, and The Changeling is also moving forward at Apple TV+.

LaValle also gave an update on The Changeling and The Devil in Silver in the same interview:

“We’ve shot the first season and we’re in post-production now. I’m saying ‘we’ because, to my great joy, I was far more woven into the process than maybe a lot of writers expect. I was part of the shooting in New York and Toronto, on set every day and getting to watch them make this thing that—I know I’m biased—I really do think will be amazing. Plus, we’re making The Devil in Silver for AMC as a limited series of six episodes to tell the whole story. We’ve written five out of the six and we’re waiting for a green light to film this summer. I really feel like we’ve taken the best out of that book and added in what will be some fun, painful horror.”

Hopefully we’ll see more than one of these projects on a screen near us sooner rather than later!
